There are a number of bathroom improvements you can make to increase your home’s resale value. From the bathtub to the sinks to the walls and flooring, bathroom improvements are highly correlated with increasing home values.

Why is that? It’s our private bathrooms where we can escape the noise and screens of our everyday world. With that in mind, you should try to make your home as tranquil as possible. Keep things simple and focus on the changes that provide the most value for future buyers. The resale value of a home vs condo vs townhome will generally increase just by improving your bathroom.

While you could consider hiring a contractor for simple bathroom improvements, luckily, there are a lot of easy and cheap ways to renovate your bathroom on your own.

Get rid of clutter

The first essential improvement for your bathroom is decluttering. For your bathroom to feel like a sanctuary, it should be tidy. Even if you bought a fixer-upper home that needs a ton of work, the first step toward creating a relaxing space is getting rid of all the clutter. For example, go through the products you use and see if any of them have expired. If yes, toss them in the trash. Those that are still good should be organized so that you can easily find them, with those you use daily being front and center.

Consider changing the color palette

While you’re getting everything in order, also consider giving your bathroom a fresh coat of paint. This is a super-easy way to transform a space, which can come in extremely handy if you don’t like the room’s overall vibe.

Even though experimenting with colors is always welcome, it might be best to steer clear of hot colors as they can have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve. To create a spa-like feeling, opt for warm earthy tones or go for muted blues and greens. You can also install wallpaper or get various accessories in these hues if painting the walls is not an option.

Think about getting new fixtures

A more significant upgrade you can also think about is getting new fixtures. For instance, to truly relax, you might want to add a bathtub to your bathroom, as showers simply don’t create that relaxing vibe for some of us. If you have space, install a freestanding tub and make it the centerpiece of your bathroom. On the other hand, if you’re working with limited space, you can add a bench to your walk-in shower.

What is more, small bathrooms can often make us feel claustrophobic, so if you want to create an illusion of a bigger space, look into floating fixtures. A floating toilet or vanity can free up the floors and make the room seem larger than it really is. In terms of smaller updates, you can swap out your current showerhead for a rainfall one or replace all the faucets and hardware.

Another thing to consider is changing up your bathroom cabinets to fit the style and feel you are going for.

Invest in handy accessories

If you’ve already upgraded your hardware, you might want other bathroom accessories to complete the whole look. For instance, you can get a new soap dispenser, a handy tray for your vanity to help you stay organized, or some storage boxes where you can keep all those products that you don’t want on display.

For a cozy bath, you should also consider getting a bath pillow to stay comfy and a caddy to place all your essentials near you. You can do plenty, like replacing the shower curtain with a more durable one that matches the overall look you are going for. For instance, earthy materials such as river rocks and wooden accents.

Make sure your robes and towels are soft

To create a place that feels like a sanctuary, you also want to feel warm and cozy. For that to happen, you should invest in your robes and towels. First of all, discard or donate all of those that are not soft and absorbent as well as those that are worn-out. Then, get new towels that are fluffy and thick. While they can be put away in storage cabinets, you can consider displaying them on open shelves as well. For example, you can roll them up and stack them next to the tub or shower.

You can even install a towel warmer so that a warm towel welcomes you after every bath. Furthermore, don’t forget to keep some hand towels near the vanity. A plush bathmat is something else you should add to boost the feeling of coziness. Finally, towels and bathmats are a great way to bring a pop of color into an otherwise neutral bathroom.

Update the lighting

Other than the bathroom fixtures, you can also upgrade the lighting. Layered lights are critical in the bathroom, as this space has multiple functions. For example, you need bright lights near the mirrors as you want to do your makeup or shave without any problems.

However, you also want to relax when taking a bath, which is why you need some soft lights as well. For this purpose, you can install a dimmer switch, introduce a few more fixtures into the space, and turn to candles that not only provide you with a soft glow but add a pleasant scent to the whole experience as well.

Introduce greenery

You must be familiar with all the health benefits that greenery provides us with, which is why you cannot overlook it when creating your bathroom oasis. From cleaning the air to boosting your mood, the perks you’ll get abound. So, make sure to do some research to see which plants would thrive in the conditions your bathroom can provide them with.

While it might seem challenging to find houseplants that can succeed in low light and high humidity, the truth is that there are many you can choose from. For instance, among a vast range of bathroom-suitable houseplants, you can consider bamboo, croton, orchids, and ferns.

Play relaxing music

We’ve mentioned adding pleasant scents and creating an overall calming aesthetics. However, we cannot neglect the relaxing sounds that will help you get in the right mindset when you enter the bathroom. Seeing as how now there are plenty of voice-controlled speakers that tolerate high humidity levels, it should not be difficult to install one in your bathroom. That way, you can create several playlists, each for a different activity.

For example, play upbeat music during a refreshing shower and some soothing jazz when taking a long, relaxing bath. On the other hand, you can always simply opt for having nature sounds in the background, such as birds chirping, leaves rustling, or the wind blowing – the options are countless.

Having a place where you can pamper yourself and go to regroup is essential in these often hectic times. By turning your bathroom into a sanctuary, you will be able to have this place inside your own home. Keep the tips mentioned above in mind when taking up this project, and you should be able to do it in no time.
